Location: Philadelphia, PA Size: 60,000 Square Feet
The Labors’ District Council of the Metropolitan Area of Philadelphia plans to construct a new 60,000 square foot facility for the education and training of their union members and the surrounding community. The new building will fulfill the mission of the Laborer’s Union to, “Assist its membership in securing employment, to defend their rights and advance their interests as working men and women, and by education and co-operation, raise them to that position in society to which they are justly entitled.”
The Labors’ District Council Education and Training Center will provide a much-needed facility for training the laborers by providing field simulated experience and space for traditional classroom instruction all in one building. The facility will also serve the community by providing space for community meetings and events.
The approach to the design is to recognize and celebrate the labor’s work. The building design utilizes a palate of masonry, stone and glass segmented to express a feeling of strength and stability. The site is located on North Broad Street in Philadelphia, PA, adjacent to Temple University and will be part of the North Broad Street renaissance.
